Factories, chemical plants and automobile emissions significantly contribute to the production of ozone gas and other harmful environmental pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide. When athletes fill their lungs with air while exercising strenuously, they also inhale toxins and dust particles that can affect breathing. Without an adequate oxygen supply, athletes cannot reach peak performance. Training and competing outdoors further increases exposure to pollution, which can result in respiratory afflictions and cardiovascular disorders.
